B - NORTH KARPAZ BEACHES

A total of 54 nests were identified on North Karpaz beaches (44 Chelonia mydas, 10 Caretta caretta). The first nest was identified on June 10, 1997, and the last one on August 4, 1997. 230 turtle activities occurred on these beaches (199 Chelonia mydas, 31 Caretta caretta) and 54 of these resulted in nesting (%23.48). The number of nests and false crawls by months are given in Charts 5 and 6 below.

Of the females which came to these beaches this year, 16 were tagged for the first time. No turtle tagged during the previous years was encountered during the research this year. One Chelonia mydas female tagged this year was reported to have gone to the Akdeniz (Mediterranean) beach by students from the University of Glasgow who were conducting their research there. The route followed by this turtle is shown on Map 2.

Out of the 54 nests made on North Karpaz beaches, hatching occurred in 37 (%68.51). In 10 out of the 17 remaining nests, hatching did not take place because of flooding. As for the 7 other nests, they were destroyed by local people. The fact that the metal nets placed on the cages had been removed and the eggs had been dug out led us to this conclusion. The turtles which came to the beach to nest were measured. Table 2 shows the tag numbers and body measurements of the turtles tagged this year.

Table 2: Tag numbers and measurements of turtles which came to North Karpaz beaches

Incubation periods in the nests on North Karpaz beaches were, on the average, 54.6 days (Min: 48, Max: 60) for Chelonia mydas (n=32), 49.8 days (Min: 45, Max: 53) for Caretta caretta (n=5).

It was also determined that, out of the 5634 eggs laid, 3756 hatchlings were able to reach the sea. This represents 66.66% of the total number of eggs. The total number of naturally unfertilized and spoiled eggs and dead embryos is 766. This amounts to 13.59% of the total. The remaining 1112 eggs (%19.73), on the other hand, were spoiled due to flooding.

It was attempted to identify areas used the most intensively by turtles for nesting on North Karpaz beaches. The locations of nests identified during the night on North Karpaz beaches this season are shown on Map 4.
