ALTINKUM (GOLDEN BEACH) I AND II

On the Altınkum I and II beaches, a total of 26 nests were identified (19 Chelonia mydas and 7 Caretta caretta). On the two beaches a total of 67 activities were observed during the season (50 Chelonia mydas ve 17 Caretta caretta). Of these, 26 resulted in nesting. This represents 37.68% of the total number of activities. The first nesting occurred on June 7, 1997 and the last one on August 4, 1997. The number of nests and false crawls on Altınkum beaches in each month is presented in Charts 1 and 2 below.

Of the females which came to the beach this year, 7 were tagged for the first time. No turtle tagged during the previous years was encountered during the research this year. The female Chelonia mydas marked with the tag #801 was determined to have come back to the North Karpaz beaches 28 days later. The route followed by this female is shown on Map 1. The tag numbers and measurements of the turtles tagged and measured this year are given in Table 1.

Table 1: Measurements of turtles tagged on Altınkum beaches

A total of 2701 eggs were found in the 26 nests on the Altınkum beaches. Of these, 1632 had been laid in Altınkum I and 1069 in Altınkum II.

This year hatching occurred in 8 out of 16 nests made on Altınkum I. Because Altınkum I lacks a sufficient slope and this year sea movements were much more pronounced than last year, the nests were flooded, and the embryos either did not develop or died in the course of their development.

Of the 1632 eggs laid in Altınkum I, 1150 were spoiled because of this and hatching did not take place. This number represents 70.46% of the total for this beach and clearly shows that a large number of eggs were destroyed. It will therefore be necessary to gather the nests in very safe parts of the beach in the following years.

On Altınkum II, hatching took place in 9 out of the 10 nests. The fact that this beach constitutes a natural barrier against the sea protected the nests from flooding. 275 out of the 1069 eggs laid in this beach were spoiled due to factors which are considered to be natural. A percentage of 25.72 of spoiled eggs should be regarded as normal and expected.

The total number of eggs spoiled either due to natural factors or to flooding on the two beaches this year is 1425. This amounts to 52.75% of the total number of eggs for the two beaches. The number of hatchlings which were able to reach the sea was determined to be 1240 on the Altınkum beaches. This represents 45.90% of the total number of eggs. The incubation periods were determined to be, on the average, 53.1 days(Max: 58, Min: 45) for Chelonia mydas (n=13), and 50.5 days (Max: 53, Min: 48) for Caretta caretta (n=4).The location of nests made on the Altınkum beaches are shown on Map 3.
